Please note that this is a CHANGE of MEETING ROOMS !!! Same building -- one floor down. Think of the time you'll save on the elevator ;-) Don't forget dues and magazine subscription renewals. For the Montgomery area residents who would like to share a ride over Auburn, we'll leave my house at the usual time of 7:00 PM. LAST MONTH'S MEETING Thanks to Carole Rutland and the staff at CCSSC, for the presentation of their new facility. Sorry I had to miss it. Plans are in the works for a group visit to CCSSC in the near future. Also, Allen reports that there was some discussion of purchasing a CCD for the club. WELCOME We've had several folks added to this month's mailing list. First, a couple of familiar names: MIKE FULMER (rainmkr@syl.mindspring.com) and erstwhile member, FRANK MOON (thufir@ix.netcom.com). Mike finally succumbed to our peer pressure, pulled out the plastic, and is now online with his new Pentium. He has already mastered "Eudora", and reports suffering from the avocational hazard of every new user... sleep deprivation. Frank found us on "SKY & TELESCOPE'S" web site under the club listings. He's living in Frederick Maryland now, still doing some astronomy, but expresses that he misses the AAS star parties and Deep South Regional Star Gazes. If you're curious about these two cryptic user names, drop'em a line and ask. JIM WERT (jwwert@aol.com) lives in Columbus and is Vice President of Marketing for Mead Coated Board Division in Phenix City. Carole Rutland reports that Jim was in part responsible for the Mead Observatory at the Coca-Cola Space Science Center. Hope you can make it over for a meeting soon, Jim. BOB CARDEN, has recently moved to Montgomery from Atlanta. Bob is with the American Red Cross. He has already visited with us at the September star party. Now that's the kind of enthusiasm we're looking for! NEAL MURPHREE (NMurphree@aol.com), from here in Montgomery has expressed interest in our group. Come give us a try, Neal. SEPTEMBER STAR PARTY We had our first clear star party in months a couple of weeks ago. In attendance at Holley's Field were: Marc Schrier, Bob Carden, Robert Rock, Larry Adams, Mike Fulmer, Allen and Christy Screws, John Shaw and yours truly. Of course, we had a look at comet Hale-Bopp, as well as several old celestial friends. Robert tried out his new digital camera. Some of the shots didn't "turn out", but with a little scrounging, we now have a few of our beautiful faces to show off to the world. Look under "Members and Friends" from the main menu on the AAS web site, and click on "(photo)" below the members' names. If your picture isn't there, we'll get you soon. If you already have a JPG or GIF of yourself, or you and your telescope, just send me a note and the photo as an attached file, and I'll add it to the web site photo album. If you don't, I'm going to download the photo from your dirver's license from the Probate Office ;-) TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE Although not a group event, the eclipse was seen, at least by those of us in the Montgomery area, as clouds parted just in time for the main event. My impression was that the eclipsed moon was somewhat darker than usual. I'm guessing that Robert will have some pictures to share at the meeting. I hope the weather was as cooperative at Callaway Gardens. OCTOBER STAR PARTY The star party for October will be on Saturday, Oct. 12. Robert, Mike and myself will be leaving the Thursday before, for McComb MS. For those of you who will not be at the Deep South Regional Star Gaze, Holley's Field will be open for business. Post Script to October Astrofiles If you have THE_SKY or other comet plotting software, Copy and Paste in the orbital elements. Tabur (discovered August 19) will be in the bowl of the Big Dipper on the weekend of this month's star party and will be Mag 5 - 6.
