The Russell Amphitheater Observing Site

This site serves as the Auburn Astronomical Society's dark-sky observing location in the northeastern corner of Elmore County near Kowaliga, on Lake Martin. The site is conveniently located for our members who live in the Montgomery, Lake Martin, and Auburn areas.  Scott Thompson makes arrangements for the gate to be unlocked.  This site has the luxury of restroom facilities.  Here's how to get there:

This large scale map of east central Alabama should
help in finding your way from surrounding cities.
 From Montgomery:
  • Take US 231 N. through Wetumpka
  • Take ALA 170 N. until it intersects with ALA 63N near Eclectic
  • Stay on ALA 63N until you reach mile marker 13
From Auburn:
  • Take I-85 towards Montgomery
  • At exit 26 on I-85 (the silo), take ALA 229N to Tallassee.
  • Stay on ALA 229/ALA 14 through Tallassee until 229 veers off to the right (north) from 14, maybe 3-4 miles from "downtown" Tallassee.
  • 229 merges with 50 at Red Hill.
  • Stay on 229 until it dead ends into ALA 63.
  • Turn RIGHT on ALA 63 North and go about 1 mile.

  • At mile marker 13, turn right onto county road 382.
  • Go one block and turn left.
  • Bare left onto the dirt road at the church.
  • The open field on the left is the observing field.

Please park your vehicles headed back toward the entrance in order to minimize headlight trauma for those staying later.

If you arrive after dark, try to be careful with your headlights. It takes several minutes to recover from a blast of lights in the eyes and some folks may be taking long exposure photographs. It's not a capital offense so if you have to use them go ahead. We'd rather lose night vision for a few minutes that have someone drive over the telescopes.
